We have a unit called The Worldwide Classroom Challenge that is PERFECT for the Olympic season. We learn all about the continents of the world in December. Now that my little ones can identify the continents on a map and know a little about some of the countries in each continent, it is the perfect time to take a "trip" back through the continents for a little competition!
This unit has one "event" for each continent:
* Asia - The Chopstick Exchange - Who can transfer the most marshmallows using chopsticks in one minute?
* Antartctica - The Great Ice Melt - Who can melt an ice cube in the shortest amount of time?
* Australia - Kangaroo Hop - Who can hop the farthest? {and use their measurement skills to prove it!}
* North America - Name That State - Who can name the most U.S. states from their pictures in two minutes?
* Africa - King Cobra Snake Stretch - Who can make the longest clay snake?
* South America - Life Cycle Race - Who can use their science skills to complete a life cycle relay the quickest?
* Europe - Language Match - Who can match the number words in English, Spanish, and French?
Medals are included for all winners and each participant gets a certificate. How much FUN do we have?? Look for pictures of our unit in action soon! :)
Speaking of the Olympics, my friend Tracy over at Creekside Teacher Tales has a great new WINTER GAMES unit, too! It is packed full of math games to celebrate Olympic events...and learning in your classroom! If you're not already a follower of Tracy's click the link above - you will LOVE her!!
Would you like to win both of these Olympic-inspired units for your classroom?? Follow both of our blogs and then comment below with your favorite winter event. I'll pick a winner on Wednesday! Good luck, friends!
My favourite winter Olympic event is the pairs figure skating!

I've loved the Winter Games ever since watching Dorothy Hammill skate in 1976. Bobsledding, downhill, moguls, luge, ski jumping--all terrific, but my favorite has to be figure skating, especially the pairs competition.

Congrats, Brenda! You are the winner! :) Expect an email soon.
DeleteThis is AWESOME!! I love the whole experience of watching the Olympics and cheering on the USA, but my favorite winter sport has to be figure skating!! I'd LOVE to win these awesome packs from two awesome ladies! :) :)

Ah, I love your products! Not to be cliche, but my favorite winter event is definitely figure skating. It's nostalgic for me too as I remember watching it with my Mom as a little girl and how magical it always was to me.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love figure skating! How people can be so absolutely eloquent on skates on slippery ice is beyond my comprehension! I'm just in awe every single time I see a skater! :o)
ReplyDeleteLove these! As Karyn said above, I LOVE figure skating! I just don't get the sport, how do they do it? I had skating lessons for like a year and could barely stand up haha!
ReplyDeleteDitto the figure skating! (Much to the chagrin of my husband, who gets tired of it being on tv all the time!)
ReplyDeleteWould love the chance to win!

Figure skating is definitely my favorite. I would love to win:)
ReplyDeleteI love all parts of the Olympics. You get to watch sports that you only watch every 4 years. I'm amazed by the speed skating every time. Can't imagine going that fast on skates! Would love to win! Thanks for the chance!

I love the bobsled event! This year, I am especially looking forward to seeing Lolo Jones compete for a medal as well as a Pittsburgh Native Lauryn Williams going for her chance. I appreciate the opportunity to win these products! They look great!

Do I really have to choose just one? I love figure skating and ice dancing, but I also love speed skating, ice hockey, and even curling! Ok, I think my favorite Olympic event is the Opening Ceremonies!
ReplyDeleteSally from Elementary Matters
Love both of these units! I love all the winter Olympics...skating, speed skating, curling, hockey, bobsledding, skiing, etc. Couldn't pick just one for the life of me!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute way to review the continents and other skills while celebrating the Olympics! Great tie-in, as usual! I prefer the Summer Olympics, but I've always enjoyed figure skating. Don't follow it much anymore, but I used to be able to tell you EVERYTHING about the competitors: Michelle Kwan, Nancy Kerrigan, Kristi Yamaguchi, Scott Hamilton...

ReplyDeleteLove this! Looks like a lot of fun! My favorite Olympic event is figure skating. I was reading Melissa's comment (#17) and I was the same in that when I was little I could have told you anything and everything about all of the figure skaters. I was so into it! My favorite skater was a men's skater, Christopher Bowman. Man, those were the days!

Well since I'm Canadian, I have to say my favourite event is ice hockey! But I also love figure skating too!
